The young Marquis of Waterford and his aristocratic friends descended on Melton
Mowbray after a day’s hunt in 1837. Several ales later the young men decided that
the town needed a splash of paint and hence the term “to paint the town red” was
born. Melton Mowbray is perhaps best known for its pork pie which is available
in abundance at the award winning Ye Old Pork Pie Shoppe on Nottingham Street.
All details of this bustling market town’s colourful past are captured in the
Carnegie Museum.
