Ashby de la Zouch Castle

Ashby de la Zouch Castle is both the fictional stage for sparring rivals and the prison cell of an ill fated queen. Robin Hood and Ivanhoe famously met here in scenes from Sir Walter Scott’s 19th century novel. Mary Queen of Scots was twice thrown behind bars at Ashby where she would have enjoyed superb views from her prison cell across the surrounding countryside. Today visitors can climb Hastings Tower and enjoy the same panoramic views and explore the castle ruins which house a secret underground passageway built during the war.
